About the Role

The Investigator, Auto Theft, reports to the Director, Auto Theft, Ontario, providing comprehensive support to the Investigative Services Team (ISD). This dynamic position requires the ability to anticipate needs, think critically, and offer solutions to problems with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.

Specific accountabilities include:

  • Vehicle Identification for member insurance companies.
    • Identify and investigate organized auto theft rings.
    • Provide expert vehicle examinations to police and insurance companies.
    • Where required, provide detailed reports on theft recoveries for police and insurance companies.
    • Seize and maintain continuity of exhibits from cloned vehicles.
    • Assist outside agencies with follow-up investigations related to stolen vehicles.
    • Assist with auto theft related investigations, which might include several categories.
    • Investigate tips into fraud-related matters.
    • Monitor stolen auto reports.
    • Provide data based queries for police and insurance investigators to assist with investigations.
    • Attend court as Expert Witness in Vehicle Identification.
    • Assist other agencies such as AMVIC, CBSA, Transport Canada, Service Alberta, Alberta Transport, and CISA when required.
  • Assist the Director with Équité programs such as PATNET, other training and marketing presentations when required.
  • Effective communication and promotion of Investigative Services Division projects and the Équité brand.
  • Invest in building long-lasting relationships both externally and internally, including working relationships with partners to facilitate future and ongoing auto theft investigations.
  • Other projects/duties as assigned for the overall benefit of the organization.

Qualifications

  • Results-focused approach and strong work ethic.
  • Energized by a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to maintain a high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Good communication skills – from public speaking/presentation skills to proficiency in use of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated Law Enforcement experience including:
    • Active involvement in investigation of major crimes and investigation of organized crime groups.
    • Ability to conduct complex investigations, including identifying the major processes of the illegal activity, and identification of major groups that are involved in criminal activity in Alberta and other parts of Canada.
    • Knowledge of the Criminal Code, specifically auto theft, property and fraud related sections.
    • Experience as a vehicle identifier is an asset.
    • Qualified in court as an expert witness in vehicle identification is an asset.
  • Ability to compile complex reports for management and investigations. Major Case Management experience is an asset.
  • An understanding of the insurance industry, insurance claims investigations, and the entire insurance process.
  • Knowledge of Carfax, Auto Plus, ISO, and how these applications can assist in the investigation of auto theft related crimes.
  • Comfortable and excels within remote work; anticipated 1-2 days per month in the office at this time.
